Virginia Beach Facts
Although Richmond is the Capital, Virginia Beach is the most
populous city in Virginia. Virginia Beach is located on the
Atlantic coastline in the southeast part of the state. The first
English settlers, led by John Smith, landed on Virginia Beach in
April 1607. The first permanent settlement was made in 1621 on
Cape Henry.
Virginia Beach gained its reputation as a famous vacation resort
in the 19th century, with the introduction of the railroad which
connected
its oceanfront with Norfolk, and the first hotel which was
constructed in 1883. Virginia Beach was incorporated as a town in 1906 and as a
city in 1952.
To this day, tourism is a mainstay of the economy and more than 3 million people
visit Virginia Beach each year. Virginia Beach's economy is also
supported by four military bases and diverse industries, including
agriculture, computer software, engineering, and technical services.
