St. Louis Facts

Although Jefferson City is the Capital, St. Louis is the second largest city in Missouri.  St. Louis  is located on the Mississippi River in the east central part of  Missouri.

St. Louis was founded by the French in 1764 when they  established a fur trading post.  Later, they founded the town and named it after King Luis XV of France.  St. Louis became part of the United States as a part of the Louisiana Purchase.

The town was incorporated in 1809. From 1812 to 1821, St. Louis was the capital of the Missouri Territory, and it was incorporated as a city in 1822.  Because of the fur trade and steamboats St. Louis remained very prosperous.

The giant stainless steel Gateway Arch, 630 ft high, standing on the banks of the Mississippi, symbolizes St. Louis as the Gateway to the West.
