Although Tacoma is the Capital, Seattle is the largest city in Washington.
Seattle is located with Pudget Sound on the West and Lake Washington
on the east in western Washington. It has a landlocked harbor
which has made Seattle one of the major ports in the United
States. Seattle was laid out as a town in 1853 and was named
after a friendly Suquamish Indian Chief in which Seattle is only an
approximation of his name. Seattle was
incorporated as a city in 1869. With the arrival of the railroad in
1893, Seattle became a major rail terminus and gateway to Alaska
during the Alaska Gold Rush.
Seattle is the region's commercial and transportation hub and the
center of manufacturing, trade, and finance. Its important
diversified industries include aircraft, lumber and forest products,
fishing, high technology, food processing, boat building, machinery,
fabricated metals, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and apparel.
