Nashville Facts
Nashville is the state capital and
the second largest city in Tennessee. Nashville-Davidson
is located on the Cumberland River in the north central part of
Tennessee.
In 1779-1790, a settlement was
founded at the present site of the city. Forts were
built on both sides of the river. One of the them was named
Fort Nashborough, in honor of a Revolutionary War General Francis
Nash. In 1784, the town was named Nashville, and it was
incorporated as a city in 1806. Nashville became the capital
of Tennessee in 1843. In 1963, it merged with the county to
become Nashville.
The city is a port of entry and important industrial and
commercial center. Nashville is best known for its music
industry. It is a major recording center especially for
country music. Nashville is a major tourist attraction and
convention center.
