Although St. Paul is the Capital, Minneapolis is the
largest city in Minnesota. Minneapolis is located on the
Mississippi River, adjacent to St. Paul, in the southeast central

“polis,” for city. Minneapolis was incorporated as a city in
1867. After the spread of the railroads in the 1870s,
Minneapolis became the gateway to the Northern Great Plains.
