Although Sacramento is the Capital, Los Angeles is the largest
city in California and the second-largest urban area in the nation.
Los Angeles is located in the southern part of California on the
Pacific Ocean. Geographically, it extends more than 40 mi from
the mountains to the sea.
A Mexican provincial governor, founded “El Pueblo de
Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Angeles,” meaning “The Village
of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels.” The pueblo became the
capital of the Mexican province, Alta California, and it was the
last place to surrender to the United States. By the Treaty of
Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, Mexico ceded California to the United
States, and Los Angeles was incorporated as a city in 1850.
Los Angeles is known for it's great climate and citrus fruit
industry. The discovery of oil in 1890s and it's man-made
harbor, and with the start of the motion picture industry, has made
Los Angeles a major shipping, manufacturing and entertainment
destination and draws millions of tourist each year..
