Colorado Springs Facts
Although Denver is the largest city and the Capital of Colorado,
Colorado Springs is the second-largest. It is located on the
edge of the Rocky Mountains, and Pikes's Peak (14,110 ft) is located
just to the west with the Great Plains to the east of it. The
population of Colorado Springs as of 2003 was 370,448.
The city was founded in 1871. Gold was discovered in nearby
Cripple Creek in the 1890s and brought millionaires and
philanthropist into the area which helped to establish the city and
make it popular as a tourist destination.
The military has established several bases in Colorado Springs
which are all home to space command centers (with Cheyenne Mountain
housing the headquarters for the North American Aerospace Defense
Command [NORAD]) and have collectively earned Colorado Springs its
national reputation as the leading center for military space
operations.
The city's economy is still based heavily on tourism. The
city is the headquarters of the U.S. Olympic Committee and Olympic
Training Center facility.
