Although Springfield is the Capital of Illinois, Chicago is the largest city in Illinois. Chicago runs for 22 miles along the southwest shore of Lake Michigan in the northeast part of the Illinois. The name Chicago is thought to come from an Algonquian word meaning “onion” or “skunk.”
Chicago was first founded by fur trappers in 1791. Chicago was incorporated as a village in 1833 and as a city in 1837. The Great Fire of 1871 destroyed an area of the city approximately 4 miles long and nearly one mile wide (more than 2,000 acres).
