Atlanta Facts
Atlanta, is the Capital of Georgia, and is also the largest city in Georgia. Atlanta is in the northwestern part of Georgia located in the Blue Ridge Mountains near the Chattahoochee River. Atlanta was originally named Terminus (founded in 1837). In 1843, the name
was changed to Marthasville. It was renamed Atlanta in 1845, and was incorporated as the City of Atlanta in 1847.
The city became the capital of Georgia in 1868.
Atlanta is overall, Georgia's major business center for commercial businesses, retail trade,
manufacturing, finance and insurance and it's home to some major corporations including the Coca Cola Company, founded in Atlanta, Georgia in 1892.
Major attractions include Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site, Grant Park, and the Carter Presidential Center. The 1996 Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta. Atlanta's international airport is one of the busiest in the world. Atlanta's population was 423,019 in 2003.
