Question: Why would gay and lesbian people ever want to be religious?
(Posted by: Dirty Parsnips on 2010-08-28 13:43:55)
I have seen endless speculation on Y!A about whether gay and lesbian people should be allowed to be Christian. And even though the most profound anti- gay quotes from the Bible are speculated to be mis- translations, or added at a later date, the very real fact is that they are now in there, it doesn't really matter where they came from. And most of the 'big 5' global religions are the same, we all know how Islam feels about gay people, and surprisingly there are even anti- gay quotes from Buddhist teachings as well. I get the logic here, but why would anyone want to support an institution that does not support your own belief systems, on any level. So aside from the endless bantering of if gay and lesbian people should be allowed in the church. One has to ask, why would they even want to be? I realize this question may sound a little one dimensional, but all the gay people I have ever met hold on to a more nondenominational spiritual belief system. I have yet to meet any who are actually drawn to organized religion. Sadly the 1st answer sums it all up too well, if the generalizations outweigh the ability to free think, I generally run away pretty fast. Seems to me to be counter intuitive logic. |

I stopped in a Unitarian Universalist Church (name sorta gives away its creed) and they have a large contingency of GLB. Apparently nothing is sin in their church They all do the religious thing, and sing: "We Are The World " Somehow, I thought it odd, doing the We thing. I wanted to sing about Jesus. I did not come away with a feeling of connection with God, only a sorrow. The kicker......a big stain glass window on the wall behind the pulpit. It was Jesus knocking on a that big wooden door, depicting the verse in Revelation 3:20: "Behold, I stand at the door of ( your heart) and knock, and if any (one) opens the door, I will come in to him and have supper with him and he with me Everybody there was into themselves, and did not have any concept of sin that offends God They all were being religious........ g'day |

Because in earlier texts of the bible, Jesus actually encouraged gays to be out about it. |

Well they live in a culture where they are constantly bombarded with religious crap. Their mind eventually becomes overwritten with this stuff and even if they have a separate belief system they are still religious due to the fact that they were brainwashed by it. |

Why should they be prevented from being religious simply because other religious people are so closed minded? |

God loves everyone. Whether being gay is a sin or not is not the debate, because we are all weary sinners, who need Jesus. Gay people not being allowed to be Christians is ridiculous |

Being gay or lesbian is of the devil,,,,they have souls and jesus died for them too,,,,and we need to pray that they change from their evil ways and let god start directing their lives,,,,,,,,,,,,,we all, i hope go to heaven together |

I wouldn't want to be if those were the only choices. However, the religion I practice has no such bigotry against gay and lesbians. “Also, take your fill and will of love as ye will, when, where and with whom ye will! But always unto me… Love is the law, love under will.” -The Book of the Law I:51, 57 |

Don't know. I certainly wouldn't want to be associated with a group of people that constantly told me I was going to suffer some eternal torture simply because I had a different sexual orientation than they consider "normal and acceptable ". Religion is for the weak, and gay/ lesbians are certainly not weak. They have to be strong to defend against such religious bs. |

Why would I want to be Christian? Because its my faith, its something i've been apart of and studied my entire life. I didn't choose to be gay, I am. And everyone I so far know accepts me. I'm not going to leave my religion because a few radicle narrow minded people told me that 'Being Gay is wrong' Because its not, as far as I know, the bible says nothing about being a lesbian is wrong. Though if it did, it still wouldn't change the fact that I am gay and I'm proud to be a Gay Christian. I hope I helped. -e |

Ok first of all God doesn't hate anyone...he hates the sin. Anyone has the right to be a Christian as when they lay their head down at night on the pillow they can ask for forgiveness of their sins & God graciously forgives them. To God gay & lesbians are equivalent to the small white lies we tell. No sin is bigger than the next one, you simply need to know you are sinning to know you must ask for forgiveness. It's kind of like being a Baptist & having premarital relations. The Bible doesn't change to fit your lifestyle people change their translation of the Bible to fit their lifestyles. In the Bibles eyes premarital relations is just as much sinning as the men & women of Sodom & Gemmorah. Again, it is what it is & it's what I believe, you believe, the next guy believes, we don't have to all believe the same thing. Good Luck & Remember NO MATTER WHAT God loves EVERYONE. |

I always wanted to know that. but, technically, god is supposed to love everyone no matter who they are. so if you're gay and you believe god still loves you then you'd want to worship him i guess? idk. actually what bothers me is that none of the bible was actually written by god or jesus. it was written by disciples and prophets who claimed god has spoken through them. personally, i believe jesus would NEVER ever call homosexuality an abomination (somewhere in timothy 3). it just doesnt fit who he is. that man was love. surely he'd be in favor of love in all forms? idk that's how a homosexual might think. |

There's a difference between being religious and having a relationship with God. A gay person that lives a gay lifestyle is unrighteous but can also be religious, however because of their sin they cannot have a true relationship with God because the bible teaches us that God hates sin. 1 Corinthians 6:9 (NASB) Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, |

Wow!what a question..lool..same thing with that good ol' gay marriage thing when marriage is originally religious. They could just easily butt-hole each other happily ever after without the need of religioulizing it but i guess things would be more boring if they stopped trying to prove jointless points and there wouldnt be that much of a fuzz to keep us n them entertained n busy. |

Religion is mans attempt to reach God...... The Cross where the Savior died, & the empty tomb 3 days later is Gods attempt to reach mankind So to answer your question: People have a God shaped hole inside their being . Anybody who recognizes that, often thinks becoming 'religious' will fill the hole. .......that is why people will seek 'religion'. However, only when it becomes personal instead of "religious attendance " does the connection become valid. You become "Christian " when you repent (turn to Christ) and put your trust into Him. (Gospel of John) True repentance will allow God to begin the process of separating you from your habitual sins Hanging on to personal preferences that God calls sin.....I cannot judge......only encourage a person to give full surrender to our Creator and His purposes. [edit] If you insert into your thinking "God made me this way ", 'God isn't against love' and self-justify it as ok in Gods sight, you might consider Proverbs 30: 5-6. "Every word of God is pure; he is a shield to them that put their trust in him. ...Dont you add to his words, lest he reprove you and you be found a liar ". [edit]..the only thing 'closed minded' is the pharisee who forgets he too was a sinner. / dm/ |

Hi there, I'm a Christian, and I'm also gay. I see no conflict between the two (and I personally know quite a few gay men who are also devout Christians). Aside from believing that Jesus is who he claimed to be (i.e. God!) there is a lot in Christianity that gay and lesbian people can take from it. For example: In Luke 4:18-19 (NLT) Jesus said, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come ". Isn't that what the LGB community wants to see?! Regarding the "anti-gay " quotes (or Clobber Passages as we LGB Christians call them!), I see them as condeming abuse of sex, not loving same sex relationships. Read the Sodom story again, it's attempted gang rape - not monogamous homosexual couples! Don't you agree that gang rape is wrong?! There isn't ONE verse in Scripture that says it's wrong for 2 gay men to fall in love and commit their lives and bodies to each other. And in fact there is plenty which suggests it IS okay. I am convinced on the basis of EVIDENCE that Jesus is who he claims to be, and if that is true - it changes everything! Even if it was true that LGB relationships were wrong, the fact we wouldn't like it wouldn't change truth. Truth is true because it's true! But, I think gay and lesbian Christians can rest easy on that - God isn't against love!!! ( "Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfills the requirements of God’s law. " Romans 13:10 NLT) Hope this helps! :-) |

Why should I turn my back on God's love because of what people who have not studied the Bible think it says. You say there are anti-gay quotes in the Bible. I do not see them there. My study and research points to things other than homosexuality as we understand it today. I trust that God has lead me to research His Word so I may understand it in my life as a gay man. Let others rage against me, I will trust the Lord. |

I am not aware of anti-gay quotes in the Buddhist teachings. Please give some examples. |
