Question: When will gays and lesbians be portrayed in children's shows?
(Posted by: on 2010-08-15 17:13:17)
I think it's about time that gays and lesbians are treated like normal members of society. In Children's shows (I mean shows like on Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, and Disney), they only openly portray straight couples. But it's about time they show that not everyone is straight, am I right? Note: Nickelodeon especially has a way with putting a lot of sexual innuendo in their shows, gay and straight. |

That would be good. People are afraid of things if they are not familiar with them. |

Most parents are heterosexual, so there would not be a great demand for gay couples on children's TV. In fact, many parents would object to depictions of same sex sexuality. |

Putting something like that into a show wouldn't really benefit the producers since its the parents that would care about such content (if they're against homosexuality i mean). If the parents don't like it, they won't allow their children to watch it, and therefore they'll lose viewers. Its not like the children realize that such a show would be rather risqué and therefore watch it for the thrill factor... |

Mario Cantone, host of the 1980's kiddie show 'Steam Pipe Alley' was an openly gay man at the time of his TV show. |

A lot of people (religious one) feel that the introduction of gay characters may influence their children to 'become' gay or just influence them into thinking that being gay is normal and that is ok for them to be gay. |

I agree with you, but realistically it's not gonna happen. The network doesn't want homosexuality portrayed on children's shows, because some might think it's not natural for children to see that on television. But one show on Cartoon Network the "Total Drama series " does have certain scenes where homosexuality is brought up, and it's a teen show the rating is TV-PG. |

Every time Americans make any television show or film with a lgbt person in it. They discriminate and stereotype gay men as being flamboyant and humorous with a lisp, and gay women as being sexually pornographic appearanced feminine women. All wanting babies together, or always dying at the end of television series or film. This typical over repeated American discriminating stereotype of gay persons, in there television shows and films. Would globally show the entire world, how homophobic and anti gay discriminating, Americans truly are. If this discriminating American gay stereotyping, were portrayed with characters in US made childrens shows or in cartoons. So it will never happen, until this discriminating toilet humored American stereotyping of lgbt persons always used in US made television shows and films 'stops' |

They have gay characters in anime for little kids if that makes you feel better In Card captor sakura Li shouan was portrayed as bisexual but he only like the the stone in Yukito 's body but Yukito and Sakura's brother Toya are actually gay . Sakura's friend Tomoyo had a crush on her (both girl ) Sakura having a cush on her teacher Miyuki . Sailor uranus and neptune were a lesbian couple in the kids tv show sailor moon it cause a big up roar in Japan but they left it . It seems like Japan has beated America showing gays and lesbians on tv . because these shows aired in the 90's . |

I agree with you. But I don't think that there should be a big deal made about it. They can just slip it in without a big to do. For instance Timmy's new neighbor could have two dads or two moms, or there could be a bull who likes other bulls instead of cows or something to that affect. I also agree that networks should stay away from the flamboyant, lispy stereotype. In the above examples the characters would simply become part of the normal framework of the show. No one needs to say anything special about them. And any characters in children's shows would not be raunchy or inappropriate. Networks make a point to show some racial diversity so I see no reason why they can't do the same regarding sexual orientation. Its exactly the same issue. |
