Question: Can anyone give me a logical explanation why gays and lesbians should not be able to get married?

People like to hide behind 'The Bible' but is it not a fundamental human right that we are all treated equally. The issue surrounding it is just homophobia. governments are trying to go with the idea that people do not want gays to get married but in fact a recent pole in Australia said that over 50 % of the population would like gays to be able to marry. And we do live in a democracy. If you did not see it above i said LOGICAL. LOGICAL. logical.

The only logical reason would be that once government became involved in marriage it was no matter of love, but a contract. Thus all marriages are contracts administered by the government.

Marriage was SPECIFICALLY created to be between a man & a woman.PERIOD. Let the gays have their little unions.Good for them. Just don't call it marriage.

That we then get tarred with the association of religion and in particular christianity... modern day marriage is just an off-shoot from a religious past I think it would be better to get rid of marriage and replace it with "legal marriage " for everyone, gay and straight, and bring marriage into the present, away from the associations of a union between some sky being

Logical, no. The best I can come up with is the fact that it doesn't fall into certain peoples' own vision of what's 'normal.' And for some, that's downright terrifying.

As a fellow aussie, I feel that the only reason people should get legally married over here is for tax purposes. its all completely ridiculous that one has to prove their committment to the government. If and when i choose to commit to someone, male or female (Im bi btw), it will not be for the governments files! you can make a much more honest and real "marriage " to someone without the legal forms, and if it means a marriage to you, then consider it marriage! Im not by any means saying gay marriage shouldnt be legal! I am completely pro equal rights! With this next election though, which of the 2 boneheads will legalise it do you reckon? Smarmy bonehead or backstabbing bonehead? Personally at the mo I think our country has bigger issues than gay marriage.

It's impossible to get a logical reason from people who object to it, just look at the answers you got from such people. With that attitude and mentality often being in the majority, is it any wonder gay people are denied equality in some countries. So much for America being the Land of the Free. Thank goodness I live in the UK.

It will contribute to the deterioration of the family unit. in this country we have a problem of confused children growing up without both parents in the home... its difficult enough to raise well balanced kids who turn into responsible adults, i dont think gays marrying/ having families...AND having society say its ok would help already dark times for the family unit. every generation says that the kids today are the worst....but 30 years ago we didnt hear the sad stories we hear today. i know its a cop out...but the children are our future. can we afford to have confused kids? we have been short changing them for years and then we have the nerve to wonder why american kids are falling behind in every way imaginable...and so are we as a country. i know gays alone arent the reason...but allowing gays to marry would be the final nail in the coffin for the institution of marriage....and possibly the end of society as we know it. it got us this far... in fact, most of us can say their existence on earth was due to a marriage. i have a better question... why cant gays and lesbians be gay without it effecting me? i have an alternative lifestyle but i dont go around and insist that it should be mainstream and demand that society accepts it by law..... i just go along and enjoy my lifestyle not worrying about how i justify it to myself. that would make me a sad confused person.
