Why has the american gay and lesbian movement been so active in the last two decades?

Question: Why has the american gay and lesbian movement been so active in the last two decades?

(Posted by: Jackie Deane on 2010-02-23 17:06:43)

What historical circumstances have allowed for the American LGBT movement to resurge in the last 20 years or so? For example, AIDS epidemic in the 1980s brought a lot of attention to their fight for recognition and equal rights (even if they didn't necessarily achieve equality). I'm looking for something in the American political environment, economy, or culture. What historical circumstances have allowed for the American LGBT movement to resurge in the last 20 years or so? I appreciate personal inputs, but I'm really trying to see the movement from a sociologist's perspective, not on the individual level.

Well although I have been criticized for saying this I'll say it again cause I think it's true...the American LGBT movement is like the civil rights act in the 60s. The fact is the Gays and Lesbians are sick of being pushed down and denied their human rights. In most cases if an individual doesn't come out of the closet no one will know they are gay, and then once they come out they are almost always quarantined to the point where you would think they had some highly contagious and deadly disease. What is worse is that it is not something that can be seen on the surface (like skin color) so one year you could be best friends with someone, and then tell them you are gay or a lesbian and that person will never speak to you again. Frankly it is ridiculous! But above all you have the leaders of our nation telling us that our freedom is the most important thing in life, and our government so solemnly backs the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - that blatantly states that any human being has the right to marry anyone of their choice - but yet Gays in America are still being denied the rights that their peers take for granted....Sorry for the rant but this is the truth...we are sick of being discriminated...
