Beware of Dating Scammers
There are many reasons that this phenomenon has occurred and one of them is that people’s lives have changed. As humans, we are natural socialites but work and life commitments have altered the way we do things. In past years, we would go out on a Friday or Saturday night, have a drink at the local bar, club or pub and maybe meet someone special and start dating. As our lives have altered we have begun looking in chat rooms, dating sites and special interest sites, where we can meet like minded people and get to know them. Of course, as the Internet has the power to be a totally anonymous entity we do not always know that the person we think we are engaged in conversation with is actually the person they claim to be. Scammers can easily fool even the most intelligent person into believing something which is not true. This is where caution and diligence are paramount. There are some guidelines which, if always applied and adhered to, can protect you against scammers. Let’s face it, people are not always shining examples of humanity and there will be those amongst us who feel it necessary to play with people’s hearts or take their hard earned money. People like that need to be watched out for. Never, ever send money or give out your personal details, such as your phone number, address or bank details to anyone you've only met online. No matter how well you feel you might know them it is always a possibility that they could have been leading you along a fantasy path for the entire duration of your online ‘relationship.’ If you have never met this person face to face there is even more reason for caution. No doubt there are also people out there who prey on the lonely, aged or vulnerable. They will hunt out people on chat sites, lay out their sob stories and fool that poor, unsuspecting person into handing over their hard earned cash to get them out of trouble. Again, vigilance and diligence are called for here. If you ‘meet’ someone online make sure you meet them in real life before you consider giving any private details to them. Be aware that not all may be as it seems. The scammers make up a very small percentage of most dating sites but undesirables will exist on virtually every site online. Please be sure that you use reasonable caution before committing to something you might regret. Getting to know someone online can be extremely exciting, so enjoy the experience. Keep an open heart and open mind but exercise intelligent caution to remain safe online.
